Indonesian court orders Soeharto corruption case to be
reopened
JAKARTA (Bloomberg): An Indonesian judge ordered a corruption case against former
President Soeharto be reopened after ruling its dismissal by the attorney general was
illegal.
Judge Andi Samsan Nganro, in a pretrial hearing to review suits filed by three activist
groups, backed the groups' claim that the procedure the Attorney General's Office
followed to drop the case last month had been illegal.
"The May 11 decision to stop the proceedings against Soeharto is illegal," Nganro, of
South Jakarta District Court, said in his verdict. "The case in the name of Soeharto
should be reopened andcontinued."
Nganro said the country's penal code permitted a case to be dropped only if it was
outdated, had already been heard in court or its defendant had died.
South Jakarta's prosecutor's office last month dropped corruption charges against
Soeharto because of the former president's poor health. (***)
