Top court to hasten review of Poso cases
JAKARTA: The Supreme Court pledged Monday to speed up the case reviews of three
men on death row for inciting the 2000 sectarian conflict in Poso, Central Sulawesi.
"We will not ask the Attorney General for a (further) stay of execution but we will
come up with a ruling (in the case) as soon as possible," Chief Justice Bagir Manan
said.
The court earlier this month bowed to public pressure to review the cases of Fabianus
Tibo, Dominggus da Silva and Marinus Riwu, who are convicted for inciting attacks in
Poso in which around 200 people died.
In the appeal, lawyers for the men presented new evidence about the involvement of
16 people they said were the real masterminds behind the violence.
The Attorney General's Office has delayed the convicts' execution, originally
scheduled for the end of March, until the reviews are complete. -- 03
