Ambon Police arrest suspects
AMBON, Maluku: Three people suspected of organizing a flag raising of the
self-proclaimed South Maluku Republic (RMS) during the separatist movement's
anniversary on April 25 were apprehended by police Thursday.
One of them was Popy Egenderph who has been wanted by the police since 2004
while the two others were identified as Jhon Sahureka and Dominggus Saranamual.
Popy was sought by police in 2004 due to her alleged involvement in the Maluku
Sovereignty Front (FKM) but managed to elude arrest by leaving Ambon for Jakarta
and later the Netherlands.
"They were arrested due to their involvement in the RMS' flag-hoisting in Kudamati
area on April 25. Their involvement with the separatist movement will be investigated,"
chief of Ambon and Lease Islands Police, Adj. Sr. Comr. Leonidas Braksan told The
Jakarta Post.
In the arrest, the police also found evidence, including a list of RMS members, their
meeting schedule and photographs of the flag-hoisting ceremony. -- JP
