Flash floods hit Ambon
AMBON, Maluku: After flash floods damaged bridges in the southern part of Seram
Island in Maluku last week, flooding continued in Maluku in the capital, Ambon on
Wednesday.
The floods, sparked by incessant rainfall over the past month, inundated residential
complexes in a number of areas, including Batumerah and Ponegoro villages in
Sirimau district.
One of the houses in Batumerah even plunged 75 meters into a ravine, although no
casualties were reported.
The flooding was also accompanied by landslides, which destroyed a bridge in Ahuru
village, thereby disrupting access to the village.
The floods and landslides have disrupted the activities of local residents, mainly
people displaced by recent sectarian conflicts. They are Southeast Sulawesi
refugees, who had moved from Waihaong to Ahuru.
The flooding also disrupted transportation routes in a number of areas in downtown
Ambon, after damage to a major thoroughfare in Sirimau district, which linked the
villages of Hukurila, Naku, Kilang and Ema. -- JP
