Execution of Tibo cs miraculously halted - delayed
Dear all,
Thank you all for your efforts to help prevent a grossly unjust execution. My letter, an
appeal from Rev. Damanik with an accompanying article below shows why the
executions would be unjust. An hour before the executions were due, the Police Chief
cancelled the executions. Official reasons given were "too close to the national
independence day celebrations" and "the police were too busy." In reality there are
senior police officials and even those in the execution squads who seriously doubt the
guilt of these men. However, with the impending executions of the Bali bombers,
radicals want some balance. The want these Christian farmers killed, and some in the
govt buy this argument.
Pressure must continue to be put on the Indonesian government - the President, the
Governor of Central Sulawesi, Bpk. Aminuddin Ponulele, Palu, Sulawesi Tengah,
Indonesia, and the Police Chief of Central Sulawesi, Brigjen Drs.Oegroseno, Kapolda
Sulteng, Mabes Polda, Palu, Sulawesi Tengah, Indonesia, and the Attorney-General
of the Palu High Court, Bpk. Yahya Sibe, Kepala Kejaksaan Tinggi, Palu, Sulawesi
Tengah, Indonesia and the Chief Justice of the High Court in Jakarta, Bpk. Jaksa
Agung RI Abdul Rahman Saleh, Mahkamah Agung, Jakarta, Indonesia. to cancel tghe
executions until all the cases in the Central Sulawesi violence are fully investigated
and determined and until the true masterminds of the conflict can be brought to
justice. It seems the executions may now be carried out on August 20 so please use
whatever influence you have to prevent this injustice, have the executions delayed
indefinitely until the Central Sulawesi situation is resloved and then there can be
confidence that justice is done. If these men are executed now before all enquiries are
finished, it will be too late to exhonerate them if they are already dead.

Hi!
As we have pointed out many times before, a grave miscarriage of justice is about to
be perpetrated against 3 Christian men to satisfy Indonesia's strange sense of justice
called "balance". If we are going to execute the 3 Bali bomber Muslim terrorists we
must also execute 3 Christians so that all can seem "fair", "just", and "balanced".
What sort of justice is this?
The Police Chief for Central Sulawesi does not believe these men are the
masterminds. Moderate Islamic and Christian leaders know they are not the
masterminds and in fact, Tibo at least, was not involved in any of the charged
incidents. The other 2 were involved in 1 of the 4 incidents referred to in the case. But
the radicals want blood and in a few hours time they will get their blood unless a
miracle occurs.
The 4 Incidents
1. The planning and training meeting in Kelei for responding to the Islamic attacks that
had occurred since December 1998 through to April 2000. It was alleged that the 3
men led this meeting and training. The suggestion is beyond credulity. The men are
low educated farmers with no military background. They did not even live in the Poso
District and on the date of the alleged meeting and training many witnesses, including
government officials, had them in Beteleme, 230km away attending Catholic Mass.
They are not even Posonese, they are transmigrants from the island of Flores and
only came to the Poso area in 2000 to work on collecting rattan cane. They were not
familiar with the area. All three acknowledged that during the 3 weeks of riots during
mid-May to early June 2000 that they also fought in the Christian militia to help defend
the Christian villages against Islamic attacks. But the masterminds? No way!
2 &3. Attacks against Kayamanya and Moengko Baru resulting in the deaths of 2
people. Tibo, Dominggus and Marinus were not involved. Everyone knows that these
attacks were led by Ir.Lateka who was subsequently assassinated in a Peace
Conference in the Kayamanya Mosque while trying to bring an end to the conflict. The
3 condemned men at the time were at the Catholic Boarding School to collect the
children from Beteleme and to get them out of the conflict zone. They were seen by
many witnesses.
4. Fight at Walisongo Mosque and Boarding School resulting in 70 deaths. The
Christians asked the military to evacuate the mosque and Boarding School as it was
in the conflict zone. During the evacuation shots fired from the mosque hitting
Christians caused the military to flee and a full scale battle ensued in which 70 died.
The Muslims killed were mutilated and bodies either thrown in the Poso river or burned
and thrown down a ravine. Tibo was seen by police on the way to Walisongo to assist
the evacuation. Tibo was in Ranononcu 6km from Walisongo. Several witnesses saw
Tibo there. However, after the incident in Walisongo, Tibo went to Walisongo, not
knowing what had happened, arrived after the incident, and was seen at Walisongo.
Marinus and Dominggus "were involved" in this battle and since Tibo was the only
other one from Flores he was implicated by association by the Muslims, and then the
3 of them were then accused of the other 3 incidents despite the overwhelming
evidence to the contrary.
So the injustice continues and these men will pay the ultimate price - in the name of
"justice" and "balance"!
