Will Tibo Die On The 12th?
By: Lian Gogali
The government is playing a chess game. But in Poso, the game is costing lives. Will
it be the turn of Fabianus Tibo and friends soon?
"Every action is like a tune played by a snake charmer to attract a cobra," one activist
metaphorically described the systematic chain of events and policies in Poso. The
bomb explosion in an empty field on Kasintuwu, Poso on August 3, started that
chain. The explosion is suspected to be a response by a particular group related to
show its presence. Apparently, the police plan to raid the group - which they suspect
as the mastermind of several disturbances in Poso (the Tentena market bombing;
shootings of the police headquarters, and mutilation of three school girls). The police
named the raid location "Tanah Runtuh" and the raid committee will include all the
important members of the anti terror Debasement 88 squads in Central Sulawesi. The
raid is scheduled for August 15, 2006.
At almost the same time, family members Fabianus Tibo received a letter from the
Palu court on August 8. The strictly classified letter states the execution date for
Tibo, Marinus Riwu and Dominggus Da Silva is Saturday, August 12, 2006 at 00.15.
Ten days before the execution of the Bali bombers.
The bomb, the "Tanah Runtuh" raid plan, the execution of Tibo and the gang, and
finally, the Bali bomber’s execution, are chess pieces in the world of conflicts. It
seems now that there is a new system "turns" - who gets the turn be sacrificed, who
gets the turn to be the sacrificial symbol of a religion.
Tibo, Marinus and Dominggus group are a symbol of Christian actors. The "Tanah
Runtuh" group in the meantime is a symbol of Muslim actors, the same goes with
Bali bombers Amrozi and the gang. These decisions clearly affect the people of Poso.
When the Tibo execution date was announced, Christian community held prayers and
peaceful protests in the Christian town Tentena. When the raid plan was leaked,
Muslim towns became tense.
The chess pieces have been played. The religious groups are shaken. As if they were
the only ones responsible, forgetting such thing called military involvement on those
past violence. Once again, the government, the military and the police are ignoring the
big picture of the conflict. Instead, they focus on case per case as if they were not
inter-related. Once again, the government is helping the military and the police cover
their tracks.
When asked why in all the conlfict areas in Indonesia (Aceh, Ambon, Sampit,
Banyuwangi, etc), only the one in Poso the government issues the firing sqaud, many
Poso residents answered: "Because there are business projects here."
Ironically, like a game of chess, the pieces are moved around consciously. This time
the stakes are human lives.
