Two boys find live explosive
AMBON, Maluku: Two scavenger children found a mortar bomb in front of the busy
Mardika bus terminal in conflict-torn Ambon city on Wednesday.
The bomb squad immediately confirmed that the explosive, found inside a plastic bag,
was a live mortar bomb.
The mortar bomb was found by Icin Atmandu, 15, and Adi Wally, 8, when they were
looking through trash for recycling. "Adi was about to set it on fire but I stopped him,
fearing it might explode. Then we took it to the police post," Icin told The Jakarta
Post.
At the Maluku Police bomb squad unit, the explosive, weighing 1.2 kilograms and
24-cm long, was described as a mortar bomb, containing TNT.
Chief of Ambon and Lease Islands Police operational division, Comr. A. Djoko
Widiyanto, confirmed the explosive was live. "When found, it was in a good condition
and dangerous," he said. -- JP
