Boat sinks off Banda Sea
AMBON, Maluku: A fishing ship carrying 10 crew and seven passengers sank in the
Banda Sea off Central Maluku regency Thursday.
The local search and rescue team managed to rescue all 17 people.
The Margo Mulyo was hit by strong winds and high waves on its journey from
Kaimana, Papua, to Probolinggo, East Java, causing it to fill with water.
The ship's mechanics then contacted the Probolinggo Port administration, asking for
the Ambon Port administration to send help.
The Hiyosi 8 fishing ship and two traditional boats found the floundering Margo Mulyo
eight hours later. It began to sink shortly after the passengers and crew were
evacuated.
"All the crew members and passengers could be rescued because the ship was
equipped with safety equipment, including radios," said Abraham Lesnussa, the
acting chairman of the Ambon Port administration. -- JP
