Police seize arms cache

MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi: The Enrekang Police have seized a number of explosive materials, homemade guns and ammunition, as well as a manual on assembling bombs from a cave near a river in Kalimbua hamlet, Kalosi subdistrict, Alla district in Enrekang regency.

Enrekang Police Chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Pudyo Haryono confirmed the discovery Friday, saying the stash was found wrapped in a black plastic bag by three junior high school students who were playing in the cave Tuesday.

Pudyo said the bag contained 11 5.56 mm live bullets, 66 bomb detonators, a homemade pistol, two packets of potassium, two packets of sulfur and a bottle filled with black powder.

A bomb making manual and a flag, believed to be a symbol of a group suspected of planning to incite conflict in Poso, Central Sulawesi, were also found.

However, Pudyo said that police had not determined the owner of the cache. "We don't know who owns the stash. We are still investigating the case. It's rather difficult to trace its owners because the cave is near a public road, that could be used by anyone," he said.

When asked about the possibility that the place was used as a hideout or base camp for terrorists, Pudyo said the area was safe and that there had not been any information about outsiders or suspicious activities in the area. -- JP
