Strong quake hits deep under Banda Sea
BANGKOK (AP): A strong 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck deep under Indonesia's
Banda Sea on Tuesday, but was not expected to cause any damage or trigger a
tsunami.
"When they are really deep they are felt widely but don't cause any damage. This one
is over 300 kilometers (190 miles) deep," said John Bellini, a geophysicist at with the
U.S. Geological Survey National Earthquake Information Center inGolden, Colorado.
He added there was no risk of a tsunami.The quake occurred at 11:20 p.m. local time
(1420 GMT) 300 kilometers south of Ambon, the provincial capital of Muluku province.
