Quake hits Papua towns
JAYAPURA, Papua: A moderate quake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale hit several
towns in Papua on Wednesday but there were no early reports of casualties or
damage.
The quake struck at 1:28 p.m. and could be felt from Jayapura, the provincial capital,
to Wamena. The epicenter was 99 km below the earth's surface in southwestern
Genyem city, some 110 km southwest of Jayapura.
A staff member at the Jayapura meteorology and geophysics agency, Lidia, told The
Jakarta Post the quake struck far from human activities.
"If we look at the quake's epicenter, which is deep below the land surface and in the
midst of dense forest, we predict no casualties," she said.
Many Jayapura residents did not feel the tremor. "Was there a quake?" asked one
resident, Anang.
Another resident, Angela, felt the tremor but said it was not strong. -- JP
