Powerful earthquake hits North Maluku, triggers tsunami warning
JAKARTA (Agencies): A powerful earthquake hit North Maluku province triggered a
tsunami warning Tuesday, causing panicked residents to flee shaking buildings.
Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) reported in its website that the epicenter
of the tremor was in the sea some 48 kilometers of Labuha's town.
BMG said the tremor was measured 6.5 at Righter Scale. It could be strongly felt in
North Maluku's city of Ternate and its surroundings.
AP news agency reported that the quake triggered a tsunami warning and caused
residents to flee their houses.
"We have called local authorities in Ternate and coastal areas to warn them of a
potential tsunami," Fauzi, a seismologist, was quoted by AP as saying. (**)
