Residents calm after tsunami warning, police says
JAKARTA (JP): Residents of earthquake-hit areas in North Maluku province calmed
down hours after the tremor, which triggered a tsunami warning and causing residents
to flee their houses, police officer said.
Chief of Halmahera Selatan police subprecinct Adj. Comr. Darmawan said residents
have returned to their houses after rushing to high land following the quake measuring
6.5 Richter Scale on Tuesday's evening.
"People fled their houses soon after the strong quake, but they have returned home
now," he told MetroTV television as saying.
He said that his office has not received any reports about casualty and property
damage, but police officers there were still monitoring the situation.
Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) reported previously that the epicenter of
the tremor was in the sea some 48 kilometers of Labuha's town.It said the tremor
occurring at 3:04 p.m. local time was measured 6.5 at Righter Scale. It could be
strongly felt in North Maluku's city of Ternate and its surroundings. (**)
