Indonesian prosecutors seek 20-year sentence for suspected
militant
JAKARTA (AP): Prosecutors demanded Monday a 20-year prison sentence for a
suspected Islamic militant accused of plotting the beheadings of three Christian girls
on Indonesia's Sulawesi island to avenge Muslim deaths.
Hasanuddin, 34, ordered the brutal Oct. 29, 2005, murders of the girls as they walked
to school in the town of Poso, Chief Prosecutor Payaman, who like many Indonesians
uses one name, told the Central Jakarta District Court.
Prosecutors say he masterminded the attack, buying machetes and leaving a
handwritten note at the scene vowing more killings, amid a wave of sectarian violence
in the world's most populous Muslim nation.
"The defendant was the ringleader of the beheading attack," Payaman said.
Two other defendants, Lilik Purnomo, 28, and Irwanto Irano, 29, were being tried
separately for alleged leading roles in the killings.
All three are being tried under anti-terrorism laws and could face death sentences if
convicted. (***)
