Strong earthquake also hits Papua

JAKARTA (JP): The 6-magnitude earthquake rattled Papua Island Monday, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) says in its Web site.

The quake occurred at 11.33 a.m. was centered some 64 kilometer-deep under the sea or some 115 kilometers southeast of Biak town on the island.

There is no immediate reports of damage and tsunami after the tremor.

Meanwhile, another tremor measuring 5.5 Richter Scale hit North Sulawesi capital of Manado Monday after the city was hit stronger quake Sunday, panicking residents and damaged a number of buildings.

Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

A massive earthquake and subsequent tsunami on Dec. 26, 2004, killed more than 131,000 people in Indonesia's Aceh province alone and left half a million homeless. (BBN)
