Ba'asyir advises government to refer to Islamic Law
JAKARTA (Antara): The high-profile Indonesian Mujahidin (MMI) leader Abu Bakar
Ba'asyir and a number of ulemas came to State Palace on Thursday to handover a
letter of advice to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
The letter contained an appeal to the president that every government policy should
refer to Islamic syariah law.
Accompanied by Muslim Society secretary general Muhammad Al Khaththath, MMI
spokesman Fauzan Al Anshori and some 20 MMI ulemas, Ba'asyir arrived at the
palace at 10:00 a.m. local time.
"We would like to handover a letter to the president and advise him how to save this
nation from disaster. The president is a Muslim, we are all Muslim and as fellow
Muslims we have to remind each other of the danger ahead," Ba'asyir told the
newsmenat the palace entrance.
However, 45 minutes after arriving at the palace gate, Ba'asyir and his entourage were
seen still waiting because they had yet to get permission from the presidential
guards.
Ba'asyir and his entourage also planned to present a similar advice to the House of
Representatives (DPR) and the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) leaders at
noon on the same day.
In March 2005, Ba'asyir was sentenced by the South Jakarta District Court to two
years and six months in prison for his role in "a sinister conspiracy" that led to the
terrorist attack in Bali in October 2002. (***)
