Darwin-Ambon race in July 2007
AMBON, Maluku: The Darwin-Ambon yacht race will take place in July this year after
an eight-year halt due to conflicts in the province.
Organizing committee member Wayne Huxle said Saturday that Ambon was now
peaceful and safe to visit. He estimated that around 60 yachts would compete in the
race.
"With an average of six crew on each yacht, it means 360 people will visit Ambon.
They're not only Australians. Based on our information, sailors from 35 countries have
searched for information on the race," he said.
Event organizer Helen de Lima said 17 yachts sailed from Australia last May to
Saumlaki, Maluku, before heading to Ambon.
"When they arrived in Ambon, they saw that the capital was safe and decided that it
was possible to hold the race again this year."
The last time the Darwin-Ambon race was held in 1998, 104 yachts and around 500
crew members competed in the event. The race was first staged in 1976. -- JP
