At least 51 die of Malaria in South Halmahera
TERNATE, North Maluku (Antara): At least 51 residents of South Halmahera District,
North Maluku Province, died of malaria over the past two months, M Alhabsy, head of
the district's health service, said on Tuesday.
Alhabsy told Antara via phone that thousands of local residents in the district were
suffering from malaria. "The fatalities happened in seven sub districts in South
Halmahera. The worst malaria-affected sub districts are West Gane and East Gane
where malaria has become endemic," he said. Alhabsy said paramedic teams,
medicines and mosquito nets had been sent to the affected areas. "We have reported
the cases to the North Malukuadministration. Unfortunately, the North Maluku
administration sent only one malaria specialist to South Halmahera. Of course, the
specialist is unable to cover the vast area of this district," he said.
