Two bombs, mortar found in Ambon
AMBON, Maluku: Two active bombs and a mortar were discovered in two separate
locations in the Maluku capital of Ambon on Friday.
The two bombs were found in the area of Karangpanjang, about 250 meters from a
police post.
A police officer, who was informed about the discovery, transported the bombs to the
police station.
"The two bombs are believed to be leftover from previous conflicts in the area.
Residents started to panic when they heard about the find," Maluku Police
spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Tommy Napitupulu said Saturday.
"The bombs will be examined by members of the bomb squad," he added.
The mortar was found by a soldier, identified as Sgt. Maj. La Ode Suwardin, in a
junkyard in the Batumerah area.
The mortar, believed to date back to World War II, was removed by the bomb squad.
