A leading human rights activist from the Indonesian province of Papua says fears for
his personal safety have forced him to leave Papua and live abroad. John Rumbiak,
who heads the human rights watchdog ELSHAM, says threats against human rights
monitors in the province have worsened in the past year and that he has been forced
to relocate, for the time being, to the United States. He has warned the Australian
Government that Jakarta's decision to divide the province is increasing conflict in the
province.
