Jakarta pledges to protect foreigners from unrest
The Indonesian Government is promising to safeguard foreigners and their assets in
the wake of continuing protests against the Iraq war.
Police in Jakarta have arrested 10 members of the Islamic Youth Movement for
harassing foreigners.
Anti-war demonstrators this week have taken to the streets of Medan, the capital of
North Sumatra, and the eastern city of Ambon.
Protesters are calling for a boycott of United States goods and services and have
urged the government to freeze diplomatic ties with Washington.
The Muslim-based Justice Party plans to send a team of volunteers to Iraq to provide
medical and other humanitarian aid.
The government has strongly criticised the US-led attacks as a violation of
international law but has promised to clamp down on any violent protests.
