Large anti-war demonstration in Indonesian capital
In Indonesia, up to 50,000 people have gathered in a largely peaceful anti-war protest
outside the US and British embassies in Jakarta.
The rally has been organised by the Indonesian Solidarity Committee for Iraqi People,
a coalition of several Muslim organisations including the second largest Islamic
movement, the Muhammadiyah.
Indonesia correspondent Tim Palmer reports.
"Significantly to the banners from the first week's rally, condemning the United States
have now been added posters and headbands stating "We love Iraq" as well as
Saddam Hussein T-shirts worn by many in the crowd. While the tens of thousands
here make this the largest demonstration in Jakarta since the outbreak of war,
demonstrations here remain noticeably calmer than else where in Asia. Meanwhile,
the Indonesian Government has restated its desire to press for a resolution against
the war from the full United Nations general assembly."
