Police Chief apologizes over HQ bombing
JAKARTA (JP): National Police chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar apologized to the public over
the bombing on Monday morning in a building inside the National Police headquarters
in Jakarta.
During a meeting with the House of Representatives, he said that he understood that
the incident had sparked restlessness among people as the bombing occurred in
what most would assume to be the most secure place in the country.
"We admit our weakness in securing the building, but it (the failure to prevent the
bombing) is because the building is used for public events," Da'i said, referring to the
function hall which suffered little damage due to the bombing.
However, he said that terrorist acts could happen anywhere. Da'i promised to bring the
perpetrators to justice as soon as possible.
A bomb exploded at about 7:30 a.m. at the entrance of the Bhayangkari building
before the bomb squad arrived at the venue. The low explosive bomb has injured a
man and damaged a small part of the building.
