Mob ransack police office, kill officer
JAKARTA (JP): Dozens of alleged members of the Indonesian Military (TNI) killed a
police officer during an attack on a police station in East Jakarta on Tuesday night.
City Police chief Insp. Gen. Makbul Padmanagara confirmed the attack on
Wednesday, saying the police and military police were investigating.
The mob ransacked the Makasar police station about 11:30 p.m., destroying the
office's windows. The mob stabbed the officer, identified First Brig. Salmun Panjaitan,
who later died at a nearby hospital.
Police, who arrived at the scene after the incident, found a green raincoat believed to
belong to one of the attackers.
"The raincoat could be owned by anyone," Makbul said.
Meanwhile, Air Force operational commander Rear Marshall Herman Prayitno said he
would fire air force officers if they were found to be involved in the attack.
The attack was believed triggered by an earlier police investigation of a sexual
harassment case involving a military officer. (bby/jun)
