Nine Bali bombing suspects brought to prosecutors before trial
DENPASAR, Bali (JP): Indonesian police on Tuesday brought nine more Bali bombing
suspects before prosecutors in preparation for their trial and handed over evidence
including a handgun and several cars.
"Key suspect Ali Ghufron, also known as Mukhlas, and eight of his accomplices were
presented," said Bali police spokesman Yatim Suyatmo, as quoted by AFP.
Police have described Mukhlas as operations chief of the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI)
regional network, which is thought to be allied to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda. They
say Mukhlas was overall supervisor of the bombings, which killed 202 people last
October 12.
Yatim said police also handed over a handgun and several vehicles used in the
planning of the bombings.
Police say Mukhlas's motive was to wage a jihad (holy war or struggle) to avenge
perceived injustices to Muslims worldwide.
The first suspect to go on trial will be Amrozi, who allegedly bought bomb-making
materials and the van used in the blast. His trial is expected to start late in April but
no date has been set.
About 3,000 police including marksmen and dog handlers will guard the hearings.
