Nine killed in restive Aceh
BANDA ACEH, Aceh (JP): Nine people were killed in the Indonesian province of Aceh
Tuesday, in the worst day of violence since a peace pact was signed in December,
AP reported.
The nine - eight civilians and one alleged rebel - were shot dead by police and the
Indonesian military in four separate incidents in an area of Aceh that is consider a
stronghold of the separatist Free Aceh Movement, Pidie police chief Lt. Col.
Maryanto.
Authorities insisted the nine were criminals who either were attempting to extort
money from civilians or kill soldiers. The death toll is the largest since the two sides
signed a peace pact on Dec. 9.
