Key suspect publicly confesses role in Bali blasts, gives details
JAKARTA (JP): A key suspect on Tuesday publiclyadmitted his role in the Bali terror
blasts and gave details of how last year deadly attacks were carried out, AFP
reported.
"Our target was America and its allies because they are the international terrorists,"
Ali Imron said during the case rconstruction at Bali police headquarters.
His aim was to wage jihad (holy war), Ali Imron said, but he apologised to victims of
the October 12 blasts which killed at least 190 people.
"I admit that I cannot lie to my heart. With this Bali incident my heart regrets it... I
apologise to the families of the victims, especially Indonesians, and also those from
abroad," said Ali Imron.
Ali Imron, dressed in a blue jail uniform, used props to demonstrate how the bombs
were assembled.
Police say Ali Imron, 30, a brother of two other key suspects, helped to assemble the
bombs and drove a van packed with explosives to an area close tothe scene of the
blast in the Kuta resort district.
Ali Imron, who was a teacher, looked confident while he told reporters and police
about the steps to assemble the bombs.
"There is no involvement of other people, the bombs is (done by) our group," he said,
saying some of the materials were prepared by Malaysian fugitive Dr. Azahari.
Ali Imron said that he alleged that cleric Abu Bakar Ba'asyir, who is currently being
detained at the National Police headquarters over alleged treason and assasiation of
Megawati Soekarnoputri, knew about the bombing plan.
"But he didn't involve," he said, saying that his borther, Ali Gufron, who also arrested
over the same case, was Ba'asyir pupil.
Police have announced Ba'asyir alleged involvement in the bombings, but he has yet
being implicated in the case.
Police have arrested more than 20 people in connection with the bombings. Several
key suspects, including alleged mastermind Imam Samudra, have been arrested.
