Bombs found on roof of main mosque in Ambon
JAKARTA (Agencies): Workers on Thursday found two home-made bombs on the roof
of the Al Fatah Mosque, the main mosque in the Maluku capital of Ambon, the scene
of bloody Muslim-Christian clashes in the past, agencies reported.
"The two pipe bombs were removed by the police anti-bomb squad and no one was
hurt," Ambon military chief Col. Yudhi Zanibar told Antara. But, nine people were
being questioned about the discovery, which was made by painters, he added.
Yudhi said residents "were not provoked" and the situation in the city remained calm.
They hoped that the security officers could reveal both of motives and certain people
who allegedly was involved in the case, he said.
Sectarian conflict which broke out in January 1999 killed more than 5,000 people in
Maluku and made hundreds of thousands homeless. In February 2002, the
government brokered a peace pace but sporadic violence continues.
