Amrozi to be tried in Lamongan over illegal firearms possession
charge
JAKARTA (JP): Amrozi, the first suspect nabbed by police in the Bali bombing case,
is to be tried for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition in Lamongan, East
Java, his lawyer said on Monday.
"He will be tried at Lamongan District Court at the end of this month or in early
March," Suyanto told Antara in the East Java capital of Surabaya.
He said that his client was suspected of owning several firearms and over 5,000
rounds of ammunition found in a forest and several other locations in Lamongan last
year.
His six accomplices are to be charged in the same case.
Amrozi reportedly said that he obtained the firearms and ammunition from third
parties, including Fathurrahman Al-Ghozi, an Indonesian who is currently under
detention in the Philippines for owning material used in explosives.
Amrozi and his brother Ali Imron, who is suspected of assembling the bombs in Bali
that killed more than 190 people, will also be tried for the Christmas Eve 2000
bombing in nearby Mojokerto.
Ali Imron, quoted by Tempo weekly magazine, admitted to their involvement in the
bombing. He said the directive came fromHambali, an alleged regional leader of
terrorist group Jamaah Islamiyah, but the target selection was left to the field
operators -- Hutomo Pamungkas, Abdul Matin, Ali Fauzi and the two brothers.
"He (Hambali) gave money to Amrozi...(who) bought potassium chlorate and
aluminum powder because the TNT and detonator had already been provided by Abdul
Matin," Imron said.
Amrozi is suspected for buying explosive materials for the bombs in Bali.
