Newspaper editor questioned for allegedly insulting Megawati
JAKARTA (JP): The executive editor of Jakarta-based newspaper Rakyat Merdeka
was summoned by the Jakarta Police on Wednesday in regards an article that
allegedly insulted President Megawati Soekarnoputri.
His lawyer, Taufik Basari, said that police had summoned his client, Supratman, to
clarify the article on Megawati.
"We don't know which article has allegedly insulted the president," he said.
Rakyat Merdeka, a newspaper that focuses on crime and politics, is known for its
articles and caricatures criticizing politicians and state officials.
The government has taken firm action against insults to the president after Megawati
complained publicly that she did not like being humiliated.
Last year, two Jakarta activists were sentenced to six months in jail for smearing
rotten food, and stomping, on pictures of Megawati and Vice President Hamzah Haz.
Earlier this year, a woman activist in Aceh was also sentenced for a similar offense.
