Maluku Police Detective Allegedly Kidnaps Abu Jihad

2 Apr 2003 9:20:50 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Abu Jihad alias Tengku Fauzi Hazdi Geudong, who is allegedly involved in the Jamaah Islamiyah organization, was apparently kidnapped by a detective in the Maluku Police, according to Abu Jihad's son, Lamkaruna, who was speaking at the National Police Headquarters on Tuesday (1/4).

Lamkaruna went to the National Police Headquarters to find out about progress in the case of his father who was kidnapped in Ambon on February 22.

He reported this case to the National Police one month after the kidnapping.

According to Lamkaruna--who was accompanied by his mother Elvi Zakaria and his lawyer Muhammad Ali—he has received information from Abu Jihad's peopple.

One of them is Jayadi, a member of the Pattimura Military Command, who said that one of the perpetrators was Syarif, a detective at the Maluku Police.

Lamkaruna then reported this to the Chief of Detectives at the Maluku Police.

"The field investigation indicates who kidnapped [my father]. Early data show that police personnel were involved," Lamkaruna said.

Bringing this case to the police, Lamkaruna said he wanted a thorough investigation.

Lamkaruna denied a report made by Sidney Jones, the International Crisis Group Director, which accused his father of being involved in Jamaah Islamiyah.

Lamkaruna even wanted to charge Sidney Jones.

However, he was not certain whether the kidnapping was related to Jones' report.

Lamkaruna explained that his father has known Abu Bakar Baasyir since he lived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

"But my father does not know Jamaah Islamiyah, though he personally knows the people allegedly involved in the organization," he said.

Abu Jihad—who built the Free Aceh Movement along with Hasan Tiro—contacted his family for the last time on Feruary 22, 2003, at about 6 pm.

He was staying at the Nisma Hotel along with his two friends: Edi Putra and Ahmad Saridup.

The two people who are activists of the Indonesian Islamic State (NII) were also kidnapped.

According to Lamkaruna, his father and the two friends went to Ambon for their clove business.
