Wiranto Denies UN Accusation
27 Feb 2003 14:8:53 WIB
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Former Indonesian military chief, General (ret.)
Wiranto, has denied the accusation that he committed human rights violations in East
Timor.
"This is not true," he said at the Crown Plaza on Wednesday (26/2), adding that a
criminal is one who deliberately makes a plan to murder, expel others and commit
other crimes.
"I tried to prevent such crimes in East Timor following the referendum," said Wiranto.
According to him, human rights violations in East Timor were problems between
countries, not between people.
As previously reported on Monday, the UN has indicted seven former Indonesian state
officials of being involved in human rights violations in East Timor.
In addition to Wiranto, six others were indicted: Kiki Syahnakrie, Adam Damiri, Zacky
Anwar Makarim, Tono Suratman and Yayat Sudrajat, as well as former governor Abilio
Soares. (D.A Candraningrum dan Andi Dewanto – Tempo News Room)
