Jussie's report the gallant last stand of the Bayside's men's team After a killer year when Bayside Men scared the living daylights out of some big clubs, the team fell at the last hurdle and was unable to consolidate it's spot in the top four. Geelong were able to pull out a strong team against the odds (and the Grand Prix meet in Sydney) and, after blowing everyone out of the water in the first half of the program, hung on to fend off Box Hill and Bayside. Glenhuntly pulled together it's best team for ages and looked like they might pinch it, in the end, winning the night's program easily. Glenhuntly 147
Bayside's chances were blown early on, and full credit should go to the guys who competed well, to give us an outside chance of stealing it coming to the 400s. It is disappointing to lose the plot marginally in the final round, but it was just a case of circumstance working against us. As team manager, I can say that it has been very little trouble organising the athletes and considering that as late as Christmas our main concern was avoiding the promotion/relegation meet, we have had a great second half. Highlight results included the gutsy performances by all three 400m runners in crappy conditions, Tony Wilson's sizzling back straight on the last lap of the 1500m which had the crowd gasping in amazement, Brian Trower's shock at having walking all 12.5 laps of the 5k walk thinking he had to do 24.30 only to discover qualifying is 25.00 (he did 24.17 anyway), two big hurdling efforts from Aaron Petersen who came in from the bush, and Liam who, at 16, is great over the 106.7cm hurdles. Big yay also for Nick Baltas who produced a huge 12.15m "first up" throw in shot put that picked up the maximum 13 points. And of course a huge thanks to everyone else who made it out on to the park. In general, it has been a huge success and to hear some of the guys talking about next season before they left the track was excellent. I, on the other hand, could only think of nipping down to The Corner and having a couple of beers, and let me say, they were magnificent! I look forward to telling you of tales of awards won, and sponsorships gained over the off season, so stay tuned. Good luck, especially, to all the guys competing in the nationals, and to Dean Lane who goes to Osaka next week to run in a half marathon. Cheers P.S.-----diatribe edited out------ Without going into the murky details, it is clear that the State League reports from Rounds 9 & 10 have offended a number of people - that was not the intention, and apologies are to be offered to all concerned. The response has been duly noted and the reports in the future will take the events of the past into account.
