Jussie's report on Round 6 down at Geelong

A bugger of a trip down the Princes Hwy was balanced by a solid result for both the guys and girls. I have to say a big thanks to all those who competed, your efforts were much appreciated.

The guys team started with a bang as Cameron grant threw yet another PB in the hammer, 62.13 winning comfortably and proving that the team is as strong as it gets in the throws. If you needed evidence, you just had to see Aaron throw 18.59 in shot, Dave throw 55+ on his last throw to win Jav, and Aaron come out and win the discus with 48.35 in normal comp and 52.76 with one of his extra throws. Maximum points in all events which gave us a good lead over other teams who were to produce distance runners later in the day.

The 100m runners ran well, Stu running 10.8, Aaron 11.1 and Matt 11.2. It was great to see Aaron running in his first comp for the season and he produced the goods in the relay and 110mh as well. Thanks heaps.

Shaun Pollard was in his usual consistent form, winning the high with 1.90 on a crappy run up. Leon did well in the pole vault as well, clearing 4.40 (with a little help from the guy holding the string) and coming second to the best vaulter going around at the minute, Andrew Vearing. Matt Woodruff dodged flying discs to pull out a qualifier after two fouls in the triple and while he wasn't too happy with it, from a team perspective, it was very handy.

The distance events were pretty bad for us on Saturday...in fact, they couldn't get any worse - no runners in either the 1500 or the steeple. Fortunately the other teams weren't able to produce too many other runners and we were spared a total disaster. The best aspect of this was that for a variety of reasons, we wouldn't have been able to do much better had this program been held at OP, whilst I'm sure that the other teams might have fared better. Ah well, these things happen and it was purely circumstance that led to this result.

As it was, we were in front coming to the last event (400m) and a victory was in sight. A very hard day for 400m running was made worse by a strong Box Hill team, however, and we had to settle for second. Glen, Stu and Alastair put in well, but we couldn't hold on for our first competition win for the season.

Second in the circumstances was a great result for us, and we were able to knock over Ringwood and APS, two teams that are very close to us on the table, and I, for one, am rapt with the result. It wasn't our strongest team, but everyone excelled themselves, not the least by even finding their way to Geelong - something the team manager and his passengers struggled with. Where is that bloody sign to the turn off????

Thanks again, and I'll be in touch as the 21st gets closer.

Cheers,

Justin

P.S. I have a gut feeling that they will be getting a bit fussy about rego numbers and uniforms in the next few weeks. Lets try and not get ourselves caught out and wear the right stuff. Hand written numbers will also come under the old folks' scrutiny so BEWARE!!! Its too hard to win stuff as it is - we can't afford to make it any harder.
