Eighth Captain of USS Indiana BB-58, in an acting capacity, from 20 July 1946, after the departure of Frank Russell Talbot until 17 August 1946, upon the arrival of James Herbert Carrington.
Sixth and last Executive Officer of USS Indiana BB-58 from 25 February 1946 until 11 September 1946 when USS Indiana was placed In Commission In Reserve.
Lester Robert Schulz was born in Steamboat, CO on April 10, 1913 son of Robert and Anna Koehlhoffer Schulz. He attended East Denver High School before his appointment to the Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD . Graduated on May 30, 1934.

July 1954 to September 1956 Assistant for Communications Operations and Plans on the staff of the Commander in Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. Had additional duty as Operational Communications Officer. During this time he had a corresponding position on the staffs of the Commander in Chief (Atlantic) and Commander in Chief (Western Atlantic Area).
Sept 1956 to June 1957 He was assigned as Assistant for Security Group Operations and National Security Agency Matters in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Navy Department.
June 1957 to June 1960 Assistant Head of the Naval Security Group.
June 1960-July 1962 Deputy Director of Naval Communications for Naval Security Group.
September 1962 to June 1968 Assistant Director of the National Security Agency for the National Cryptologic (Secret Codes) Staff, FortMeade, MD
June 1968 to 30 June 1971 Chief of the National Security Agency (Pacific).
