PART I Summary
A. U.S.S. INDIANA in Task Group 38.1 patrolled off the east coast of Honshu, Japan, Awaiting the formal surrender of the Japanese Empire. This report covers the period of 16 August 1945 to the 02 September 1945, during which time no enemy action occurred, and ships own air craft were not flown.

B. Operations of this Task Group consisted of patrolling off the coast of Honshu, Japan and air patrols over Japan locating and dropping supplies to POW Camps. Training during this period consisted of AA practice, firing at towed sleeves on 16 August and 01 September 1945 and at TDD drones on August 18 1945.
C. U.S.S. INDIANA's mission was to supply anti-aircraft and surface support to Task Group 38.1
D. Task Group 38.1 with other task groups of Task Force 38 were dispersed around the Japanese Home Islands for a show of force awaiting Japan's formal surrender.
E. No enemy forces were encountered during this period

PART III Chronological Account of Action
A.
16 to 19 August 1945
Drilling, reaming, replenishing, refueling destroyers.

19 August 1945
0800 Transferred 76 marines and 4 sailors to USS GARRARD (APA-84) for temporary duty in Able Company, 1st Battalion Marine Landing Force 1st Lt J.G. Moody USMC in charge.

20 August 1945
1445 Transferred to USS WANTUCK (APD-125) 234 sailors for temporary duty with naval battalion landing force, Cmdr. F.H. Brumby Jr., Gunnery Officer of INDIANA, in charge, as part of Task Force 31.

21 August 1945
Rearmed ship, refueled from tanker. Transferred bomb disposal and communications teams for temporary duty in Task Group 31.

22 August 1945
0445 In company with replenishment group. 0838 cleared replenishment group

23 August 1945.
In company with U.S.S. PRESIDIO (APA-88) along side U.S.S. ALABAMA (BB-60), transferred personnel, mail and freight.

24 August 1945
Air operations over Japan locating POW camps. Fueled Destroyers

25 and 26 August 1945
Air supply to POW camps.

27 August 1945
Refueled from tanker, Task Group 30.1.37. Alongside U.S.S. MASSACHUSETTS (BB-59) to transfer (71) enlisted men en route to United States for discharge as part of demobilization of the Navy. In company of fuel and replenishment group

28 August 1945
Supplies from U.S.S. VIRGO (AKA 20). 1130 Cleared replenishment group.

29 August 1945
Air operations over Japan dropping supplies to POW camps. Destroyer exploded floating mine with gun fire.

30 August 1945
Air operations over Japan dropping supplies to POW camps. Fueled destroyers.

01 September 1945
Operating Southeast coast awaiting the formal surrender of Japan.

02 September 1945
U.S.S. INDIANA in Task Group 38.1 cruising off Japan awaiting the signing of the surrender of the Japanese. Southwest tip of Honshu, forenoon. Task Group launched a massive flight in show of strength for the surrender on the U.S.S. MISSOURI at 0900 thus ending the war. War with Japan is over.

Spent the day refueling destroyers.

0130 Entered Tokyo Bay. 0929 Anchored in berth Fox-66, Tokyo Bay. 1235 The naval landing force from the Indiana returned to the ship having completed their assigned duties.

06 September 1945
During the afternoon the marine landing force from the Indiana returned having completed their assigned duties.

09 September 1945
In the evening received POW's aboard as follows for temporary billeting; one naval officer, 23 enlisted men, and five marines, one Canadian army enlisted man and 64 naval civilians.

10 September 1945
In the morning transferred former POW's who are en route to Guam. In the afternoon received aboard for temporary billeting 6 naval officers, 24 naval enlisted, 23 marines enlisted, and 90 Canadian enlisted.

11 September 1945
Commenced changing ships personal of short overseas duty for men of long service, and receiving men from other ships for transportation, preparatory to INDIANA going state-side.

14 September 1945
1250 U.S.S. INDIANA departed Tokyo Bay in company of USS MANSFIELD (DD-728) for Pearl Harbor.

15-22 September 1945
En route Pearl Harbor.

23 September 1945
0800 Moored in Pearl Harbor. 1600 Underway for San Francisco, with 1013 passengers for discharge.

24 to 29 September 1945
En route to San Francisco

29 September 1945
0744 Passed under Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco Bay. 0912 Moored starboard side to in berth #8 in Hunters Point Navy Yard, San Francisco, California. 1000 14 officers and 308 men departed for receiving stations and separation centers for release from active duty.

30 September 1945
Moored berth #8 in Hunters Point Naval Yard, San Francisco, California. Set all clocks ahead at 0200 hours. First one-half of the ships company went on 21 day leave. When they return the second half will go on 21 day leave.

Moored at US naval dry docks, Hunters Point, San Francisco.

15 October 1945.
0615 Underway for post repair trials. 1831 Moored US naval dry dock Hunters Point San Francisco.

First half ships company returned from 21 days leave.
