Mandriva 2005 Installation on Compaq Evo N800v
I did not have any serious problems during the installation.
I use GPRS Internet instead of Winmodem.
Devices auto-detected/working properly:
- Touch Pad and USB Mouse
- Video
- Audio
- Ethernet
- USB 2
- DVD/RW
- Modem (works with Mandrake Powerpack only)
- Power management
Devices not detected/not working properly:
Steps I did:
- I run Mandriva 2005 installation from DVD.
There were no problems during the installation.
- Patched installation from prepared prepared CD-ROM with updates (downloaded from net).
In text mode press [CTRL]+[ALT]+[F1] then log in as root and enter:
# cd /mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS
# rpm -Fv *.rpm
# rpm -i kernel-2.6.8.1.??mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm
# rpm -i kernel-source-2.6-2.6.8.1-??mdk.i586.rpm
# shutdown -r now
- Configured firewall for multiple network devices:
This have to be done once all network devices are configured.

- Uncheck everything except Echo request (ping) and press OK
- Selected ppp+ and pressed OK
- Manually replaced 'loc' label with 'net' in shorewall configuration:
This is only needed if you use multiple devices to connect to internet.
$ su
# vi /etc/shorewall/interfaces
- Configured subpixel hinting:
- Star | System | Configuration | Configure Your Desktop
- LookNFeel -> Fonts
- Use anti-aliasing for fonts -> Configure ...
- Check in Use sub-pixel hinting and set the type to Vertical
Installing Modem
Mandrake Powerpack supports Connexant HSF modems, however I use GPRS Modem.
GPRS Modem over USB2Serial Bridge
- USB2Serial Bridge Mobile Action MA-8720C (MA-8720P does not work)
- Siemens CX65 mobile GPRS Class 10 (also works with C60 / S55)
Installation:
- Plug-in the cable and check whether the module was load:
$ su
# lsmod
...
pl2303 14820 0
usbserial 29232 1 pl2303
usbcore 99068 9 usb-storage,usbmouse,hid,pl2303,usbserial,ehci-hcd,ohci-hcd
...
- # vi /etc/rc.d/rc.local
Add following line at the end of the script:
ln -s /dev/ttyUSB0 /dev/modem
This is hack kppp does not list device /dev/ttyUSB0 and mandrake devfs makes it impossible to create permanent link in device file folder.
- Install KPPP, caching-nameserver, bind, bind-utils if not present, and run KPPP.
- Click Configure...
- Click Device tab and select /dev/ttyUSB0
- Click Modem tab and click Query Modem ...
Descriptions should appear, if not it indicates problem with cable.
You can also click Terminal ... button and issue some AT commands as a test.
- Click Modem Commands ... button and insert your Initialization string 2 supplied by your internet provider.
In my case:
AT+CGDCONT=1, "IP","internet.t-mobile.cz"
If you copy string from Internet replace all apostrophees.
- Click Accounts tab
- Click New ... and then Manual Setup
- Enter Phone Number In my case:
*99***1#
- Click DNS tab
Check in Disable existing DNS servers during connection
Mounting the flex-memory of mobile:
- Download and unzip FUSE 2.3.0 package:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/fuse/
- Go to the folder where FUSE is unpacked and enter following commands on commandline:
$ su
# ./configure
# make
# make install
- Download and unzip SieFS 0.5 package:
http://chaos.allsiemens.com/siefs/
- Go to the folder where SieFS is unpacked and type following commands on commandline:
$ su
# ./configure
# make
# make install
- Mount the flex-memory filesystem:
$ su
# mount -t siefs /dev/ttyUSB0 /mnt/mobile
Note: name of the device file might differ based on the linux distribution and cable
type you are using. For serial cable it will probably be /dev/ttyS0 for usb cable: /dev/ttyUSB0.

Mandrake 9.2 Installation on Compaq Evo N800v
I did not have any serious problems during the installation.
Kernel rebuild is required to turn on Power management and USB2.
Winmodem must be installed manually.

- Touch Pad and USB Mouse (reboot to switch)
- Video
- Audio
- Ethernet
- DVD/RW (intervention required)
- USB 2 (intervention required)
- Modem (intervention required)
- Power management (intervention required)
Devices not detected/not working properly:
Steps I did:
- I resized windows ntfs partition first still in windows.

- I run Mandrake 9.2 installation from CD.

- Patched installation from prepared CD-ROM with updates (downloaded from net).
- Rebuild Kernel with ACPI & USB2 support.

Check on Enable ACPI
- Also modify the boot options if your cdrom is hdc add hdclun=0 option.
This will fix 'list CDRW seven times' behaviour of the 9.2 kernel.
Installing Modem
There is free driver for Conexant modems (works for me):
For more info:
Installation from source tar:
- extract the package with "tar -xzf hsflinmodem-{version}.tar.gz"
- change to the package directory with "cd hsflinmodem-{version}"
- run "make install" from the top of the package directory.
- run "hsfconfig" to complete the installation and configure your modem.
(Alternatively to this whole procedure you may generate RPMS from the tar
package using rpm -ta hsflinmodem-{version}.tar.gz")
Power management
Kernel-update and rebuild plus boot options configuration required then works.
DVD/RW
It is necesary to add hdclun=0 into boot options.
I also added following line into /etc/fstab and created mountpoint folder:
/dev/scsi/host1/bus0/target0/lun0/cd /mnt/cdrw iso9660 iocharset=iso8859-1,umask=0,users,ro,noauto 0 0
