I first picked up this guys books because of the stuff he co-wrote with
Janny Wurts. A friend had recommended Daughter of the Empire and once I find a good author I go hunting for every book I can find by that author. I found quite a few, some in friends book collections, some in the library. Then I started buying them and I now have quite a collection.
I feel the co authored stuff is better than the stuff he writes alone. It seems to me there are some gaps in his characterisations and writing style that get filled in by Janny Wurts, so the books end up far better. But I do like them all.
Faerie Tale
- A Strange little offering set in a world quite unconnected to the rest of his stuff. Definitely not for kids, I rather like this one. It brings the beauty and terror of the fey folk into the modern world.
- Now the main series. All the rest of these are set in the same universe. Eventually he calls them the Serpentwar Saga, and Saga is right. These are all about several generations of the same families. I rather like the characters, but his only tiny flaw is I feel a tendency to have the same people with different names in different generations.
Magician : Apprentice
Magician : Master
- I'm pretty sure I've got both of these in one edition, but Amazon.com say this is the 'Author's Preferred Edition' and who am I to argue.

Silverthorn
A Darkness at Sethanon
Prince of the Blood
The King's Buccaneer
Shadow of a Dark Queen
Rise of a Merchant Prince
Rage of a Demon King
Shards of a Broken Crown Hardcover
- I haven't got this last one yet, I tend to wait for
paperback or bookclub editions cos they're cheaper. But it's probably as good as all the rest.
with Janny Wurts
- Daughter of the Empire
- Servant of the Empire
- Mistress of the Empire
Read these, they are absolutely brilliant.
I was in an online chat with this author, another nice person, go read all their books.
