The Afro Identity
My mind is spinning
And beginning
To slip off its axis
My neural patterns no longer in sync
The melodies of my thoughts
A once soothing rhythm becoming
Increasingly staccato
Educate me
About the Afro identity
I’ve just got to know
Because not knowing
Who I be
Is sending me
To the brink of insanity
I feel a void
Depleted by ignorance
Which must again
Be filled by knowledge
And the experience of my existence
From my emergence of the womb
Till the day I lay in a tomb
I will continue
To push the limits of consciousness
And awareness
Until I break the boundaries
Which I you have placed on my education
Those same restrictions you used to
Chain the minds of my ancestors
On the plantation
Taking HIStory and HERstory
Tossing them aside
So you can hide
The African past
But alas
The oppression
And the suppression of the oppression
Is no longer in recession
But climbing towards a recovery
Of HIS and HER story
I serve to solve a mystery
In order to open the pathway to my
TRUE identity
When solved I can shed
the facades of society
which have betrayed my being
Humility has overtaken me
O God tell me
Is this the key
To the awakening
Of my mind, soul and body
Will I then be truly free
To be
Or not
To be
A part of this
Materialistic society
How can I remove these bars
Of mental slavery
This duality
Tears my mind
From my heart and soul
Sold
My soul is sold
How can I satisfy my superego
That desires sublimation of the soul
When I was sold to American dream
But dreams no longer satisfy me
Where can I find the African truth
HIS and HER stories’ roots
Already succumbed to the grave
My brother
My sister
I see you digging hastily
As hungry as I am
In the search for who I am
But I am ready
With the key of knowledge
I unlock my history
Which holds the answer to my identity
Constantly searching
Uncovering digging
For the truth which
Has been buried
My mind enslaved
And I’m striving to break the chains
Which restrain
My frontal lobe from normal thought processes and reasoning
Is it here
I can hear
My ancestors calling my name
I must find the truth
Because not knowing
Is driving me insane
