A Lyrical Culture

Black,
Is the color of my skin
But black is more than that.
It is a culture.
All of us different,
Swarming through the streets
All the while rapping
Switching beats.
I tap my feet
to the music that cries from the crowds.
Our music
is more than the sounds of instruments and voices
A great expression of choices,
that we make everyday,
it tells who we are,
and who we wish to be.
Little black boys
and little black girls
are born to dream.
We pray for the day
we no longer have to fight.
First slavery
then poverty
and stricken rights.
We were told we were stupid and slow,
that we couldn't be taught.
We were told we were savages,
uncultured and always fought.
We were stolen from Africa,
lost ties to our pasts.
We were told we couldn't talk,
so instead we sang.
All of our voices united.
They rose to the heavens.
Every la la la
to every ta ta ta,
became a soulful expression
So,
What is your impression?
