January 17, 2007- It’s been a hell of a long time, but the Hale Storm is back! The 2007 BFL Schedule has been released, and if it is any indication, this will be one heck of a 10th anniversary season.
Let’s take a brief look at some of the marquee matchups, shall we?
Throwoff 2007 – Saturday, May 12 – Crusaders vs. Sand Storm
These two teams have met quite a few times over the past four seasons. Their second matchup, on June 14, 2003, produced one of the greatest comebacks in BFL history. In that historic moment, the Crusaders reeled off 27 unanswered points, stunning the Sand Storm, 86-79. If that game was any indication, we could be in for another classic.
Saturday, May 19 – Falcons vs. Dragons
A champion vs. champion matchup, with the 2002 and 2005 BFL champions squaring off for the first time ever. The Falcons are coming off a season where they were upset in the semifinals by the eventual champion Sparrows, 76-73, in overtime. This team is still in top form despite the only loss ever in their career so far. The Dragons had made a huge return to past glory last year, making it to the semifinals only to fall to the Icebergs, 80-64, in a game played under the lights.
With this bit of background in mind, it is easy to see why this could be the first great matchup of the season.
Wednesday, May 23 – Warriors vs. Hustlers
The newest team into the BFL, Stephen D. of the Southerland Warriors, will make his regular season debut against the BFL Bowl VIII runner-up, Akil Simon of the Allison Hustlers. Let’s hope he’s prepared for this one, because his next two matchups aren’t any easier.
Tuesday, June 12 – Hustlers vs. Falcons
A rematch of BFL Bowl VIII, a game some consider to be the best BFL Bowl ever. We could be in for another classic based on that BFL Bowl alone. Go see the highlights video on the BFL website if you don’t believe me, or wait for the DVD release of the full game. It was that good (even though yours truly never saw it in person).
Saturday, June 16 – Warriors vs. Sparrows
The Warriors’ second BFL game pits them against the defending five-time BFL champions. Can the Warriors’ debut season get any tougher than this? Yes, it can, unfortunately…
Saturday, July 7 – Falcons vs. Warriors
Did I mention that the Warriors’ schedule was getting tougher? Well, here it is, as Stephen D. faces off against the 2005 BFL champion Falcons. He’d better bring his A game to this one, but the same can be said for his previous two matchups.
Thursday, July 12 – Dragons vs. Sparrows
A rematch of Hall of Fame proportions, as current Hall of Famer Rich Z. of the Dragons faces possible Hall of Famer Ken Goldstein of the Sparrows in another episode of the most storied rivalry in BFL history. Besides, it wouldn’t be a tenth anniversary season without this matchup on the schedule now, would it? I thought so.
These matchups, I feel, are the ones to look out for this season, but surprises can and will happen. Which will those be? Find out later this season.
And happy tenth anniversary, BFL!
