"THE (SO-CALLED) SHROUD OF TURIN"

The following related scriptures quickly expose the so-called Shroud of Turin as being "an obvious fake".

John 19:39, 40 "AND THERE CAME ALSO NICODEMUS, WHICH AT THE FIRST CAME TO JESUS BY NIGHT, AND BROUGHT A MIXTURE OF MYRRH AND ALOES, ABOUT AN HUNDRED POUND WEIGHT. THEN TOOK THEY THE BODY OF JESUS, AND WOUND IT IN LINEN CLOTHES WITH THE SPICES, AS THE MANNER (i.e. custom) OF THE JEWS IS TO BURY".

John 20:3-7 "PETER THEREFORE WENT FORTH, AND THAT OTHER DISCIPLE, AND CAME TO THE SEPULCHRE… AND HE STOOPING DOWN, AND LOOKING IN, SAW THE LINEN CLOTHES LYING; YET WENT HE NOT IN. THEN COMETH SIMON PETER FOLLOWING HIM, AND WENT INTO THE SEPULCHRE, AND SEETH THE LINEN CLOTHES LIE, AND THE NAPKIN (i.e. literally, a Greek handkerchief), THAT WAS ABOUT HIS HEAD, NOT LYING WITH THE LINEN CLOTHES, BUT WRAPPED TOGETHER IN A PLACE BY ITSELF."

There it is. Get the actual picture? Christ's Body was not simply "COVERED" by a singular linen shroud, but was "WRAPPED" in a continuous band of linen wrappings, interspersed with "an hundred pound weight" of burial spices! In other words, Christ's Body WAS "WRAPPED" IN THE MUMMIFICATION MANNER OF THE ENBALMING OF THE EGYPTIAN DEAD, which the Jews had adopted from The Egyptians during their 400 years of Egyptian captivity (See Gen 50:1-3, 26). But, unlike that of Egyptian wrapped mummies, Christ's Face was left un-wrapped, UNTIL It was separately wrapped with (wound) toweling, which John and Peter later saw as STILL LYING WRAPPED----BUT APART FROM--Christ's Dead Body. The so-called Shroud of Turin would thus have had to be in two separate pieces! It would have consisted of one small, handkerchief type face napkin, showing the imprint of Christ's Face alone; and the second, larger portion of the shroud, showing the imprint of Christ's Lower Body from the neck downward!

Both of the above would not have been simply "lying over" Christ's Dead Body, but "continuously wrapped about it", and interspersed with 100 pounds of burial spices! Simply picture the similar, voluminous linen wrapped forms of the ancient Egyptians' "mummified Pharaohs" (minus the head wrapping), and you will have an accurate, scriptural picture of Christ's "mummy type" burial wrappings.

And why did Joseph and Nicodemus "mummify" Christ's Dead Body? For several reasons.

(1). At that time, The Jews were said to still observe the ancient, pagan "custom" of burial, which their fathers had adopted from the Egyptians during their 400 years of Egyptian captivity! John 19:40, compared with Gen 50:1-3, 26. (See the similar "mummification" of Lazarus' Dead Body; John 11:44, in context.)

(2). Although all of the disciples had been told by Jesus that He would be slain, buried, and resurrected in three literal solar days and nights; e.g. Matt 16:21, not one of them believed this (not even Joseph and Nicodemus, who buried Him), UNTIL some time following His resurrection; e.g. John 19:9, in context. And, as also so stated in John 20:19-21 and 1-18, Mary and "the other women" did not come to Christ's tomb to await His prophesied resurrection. Rather, they came simply to view and anoint His Dead Body!

Joseph and Nicodemus obviously did not believe Christ's prophesied words concerning His death, burial, and 72 hour later resurrection of Matt 16:21; etc. Otherwise, they would certainly not have attempted to "mummify" Christ's Dead Body at John 19:38-42, to supposedly "preserve" His Dead Body thereafter.

Vatican Rome is notorious for attaching credence to numerous "religious icons", "weeping statues", "stigmatic bleeding hands", and "miraculous visual appearances" of the so-called "Virgin Mary" (and even Peter's supposedly circumcised foreskin)!

So much for these forbidden "idolatrous hoaxes".

But the most compelling scriptural proof that refutes the fable of the so-called Shroud of Turin is found in the following "prophetic verses" surrounding the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ Jesus:

Isa 52:14 (In full context, with Isa Ch 53), AS MANY WERE ASTONIED AT THEE; HIS VISAGE (i.e. Christ's scourged face, following "the scourging" at Pilate's mock trial) WAS SO MARRED MORE THAN ANY MAN, AND HIS FORM (i.e., Christ's beaten Body) MORE THAN THE SONS OF MEN:

In the foregoing verses (as well as those that follow, in Ch 53), there can be no doubt that verse 14 is referring prophetically to none other than Christ Jesus!

The Scofield Reference Bible, in it's footnote concerning Christ's above prophesied scourging, states that the literal rending of the passage is terrible; i.e., SO MARRED FROM THE FORM OF MAN WAS THE ASPECT, THAT HIS APPEARANCE WAS NOT THAT OF A SON OF MAN (i.e., NOT HUMAN); THE EFFECTS OF THE BRUTALITIES DESCRIBED IN MATT 26:67, 68, MATT 27:27-30.

There it is. Christ's "scourged" Face and Body were "SO MARRED" that He no longer looked like a human being!

Strange indeed, then, that the Shroud of Turin (if authentic) would not reflect the foregoing scriptural description of Christ's marred Face, and His Dead Body! No such "marring", as set forth in Isa 52:14, appears thereon! Reason enough, in and of itself, to expose The Shroud of Turin as a "not so cleverly contrived" hoax!

Q. What caused the previously unbelieving two Apostles to believe Christ's oft-repeated prophesy concerning His death, burial, and 72 literal solar hour resurrection of Matt 16:21, with Matt 12:40?

A. When they stooped down and looked into the sepulchre, the removed head napkin permitted them to look into the (un-collapsed) 100 pound "cocoon" of Christ's (unwrapped, mummy-type) sarcophagus! There is no possible way that His Body could have come out of that empty "cocoon", aside from a miraculous, resurrected deliverance from it! Then, they remembered Christ's prophetic words of Matt 16:21 (and elsewhere); and they believed them (and Him), for the very first time. Not one of Christ's Twelve Apostle had previously believed His Matt 16:21 prophecy, UNTIL some time following His death, burial, and resurrection. See John Ch 20.

As in the case of The So-called Shroud of Turin, one must always permit The Word of God to "verify" any and all such (obviously) unscriptural, idolatrous claims!

The 2nd Commandment of "THOU SHALT NOT MAKE UNTO THEE ANY GRAVEN IMAGES" has been (conveniently) omitted from The Catholic Catechism. Ever wonder why?
