Regions - Balazar and the Elder Wilds - Background and History

Illusion.gif (999 bytes)

You can get good background and history information from the Glorantha web site under the headings Common Knowledge and History of Balazar.  I have a timeline for the region with events that only occured in my Glorantha on this site.

The land of Balazar is a wild, mostly untamed land to the northwest of Dragons Pass where the residents live a life that (they believe) would be recognized by their oldest ancestors. Most of the Balazarings live in small social units called hearths that are grouped together into clans which are parts of larger clans that are ostensibly allied with one of three citadels. More "advanced" Balazarings live in one of three neolithic Citadels built by the regions eponymous ancestor, Balazar.

For the most part events in the region happened pretty much as described in GM up to the 11th century. When Balazar unified the clans in the 1080's more conservative elements among the clans refused to adopt the ways of this foreigner. Balazar helped these clans to settle in the Elder Wilds, primarily in the area just to the north of the Elf Sea. These clans retained the name of Votanki and see themselves as the true heirs of Votank. Due to their small numbers they still must maintain some connections to the Balazaring clans to prevent too much inbreeding. The major unusual activity occupying the Balazarings these days are the The Boar Wars.
