The Shattered World

Long ago the world was in peril from a great sorceror.  This sorceror whose name is now lost was the eptiome of evil. He attempted to subjugate the entire world and it was only through a great coalition of forces that he was defeated.  The struggle changed the face of the very planet and much was destroyed or lost.  The defeated sorceror was chained and imprisoned at the centre of the very world using the most potent of magics and wards..  The races of the world felt that they could finally rest in security.  But they were wrong.  Lieutenants of the sorceror, now known as the Chained Man, were still active and posed a dire threat.  Secretly they worked long and hard to free the Chained Man.  It is unknown exactly what they did do but no one remained unaware of their actions. Whatever forces they brought to bear, whether vile sorcery or some unknown force they managed to shatter the world.  It is unknown whether any of them or indeed the Chained Man himself survived the shattering.   But at least parts of the old world did survive the shattering.

This event occured over five centuries ago.  Only through great effort did any part of the old world survive the shattering.  Now the shattered pieces float in space and there is little or no contact between any of the islands.   But all this of course is about to change...
