Fred John Hanna attended Jefferson Grade School, transferring to Daniel Webster when his father, a popular Logansport attorney; moved his family from Garfield Avenue, across the street from Fairview Park, to East Broadway, along the boulevard. Fred was a leader throughout his years at LHS: As President of the Student Council, he was the closest thing we had to a Student Body President. Fred was an officer in Key Club, Latin Club, Hi-Y and Music Club. He was a Student Rotarian, a member of the "L" Club and Student Manager for the Football Team. He was a talented musician - a saxophone player in the band, swing band and orchestra. And he was a member of the National Honor Society. He was among the best and the brightest. Classmates will remember him driving his '51 Chevy - usually with a pretty girl at his side - but always armed with a disarming smile. Some may recall when, during our senior year, he returned from a weekend visiting DePauw College. He had been accepted to the college of his choice and was proudly wearing the pledge pin from a fraternity. He displayed a zest for life and all the ingredients for a successful future. When illness struck him after a few short years in college, we were stunned. When it became apparent that he would be unable to continue we felt hurt. And when he died as a young man, we found it confusing and nonsensical that one of us with such an abundance of talent and such a willingness to give was taken from us. Our memories of Fred are some compensation, of course, but who can help
but wonder what might have been.
