William James White

William James White was one of the first members of our class to lose his life and, although we have been unable to obtain details of his death, some recall that Bill died of a dream.  He had always dreamed of owning a Corvette.  A few years after we graduated, Bill earned enough money to buy that Corvette and a crash of that automobile resulted in his demise – and our loss.

Affectionately known as “Sweaty Bill” he was a little timid but had a grin as big as all outdoors.  Many will recall that he was a member of the Calvary Presbyterian Church.  He is remembered as a hardworking lineman on the undefeated Berries football team, a determined member of the track team, and proud of being in the “L” Club - although he modestly listed none of these activities in the Tattler.  Bill was a competitor, and played a key role on the championship intramural basketball team.

But what we remember most about Bill White was that big grin.  He is missed.
