| The St. Valentine's Day Massacre |
| Well it wasn't really a massacre, but considering the relative positions of the two clubs (in both terms of league position and historical standing), it might as well have been. When we won promotion to division one, we realised we would get to play Manchester City in the league, and this was an incredible thought as they had always been considered as our illustrious neighbours. We had played them at Gigg earlier in the season and they had scraped a 1-1 draw after David Johnson had given us the lead midway through the second half. By February 1998, Bury had been on a bad run and were bottom of the first division. City had been on a bad run for about four years and were struggling. City's Georgian genius George Kinkladze, who had missed a penalty in the game at Gigg Lane was out injured. Anyway, to cut a long story short, we beat them. 1-0. Paul Butler scoring in the 54th minute to give us a monumental victory and to give City one of their most embarrassing results ever, probably. It was sweet. So sweet. |
