The White Mask
We bear black feathers, my family line
Ever destined to find the one
Embrace the light within the dark
I am the ghost that flies past dusk
Under the watchful eye of time
…Alright, this was a bit abstract.
Cut me slack! I just got out of my Slayers funk and am finally reading the recent fics. Then I read ‘Fallen’ and it took my breath away. I was on the verge of tears and I had no idea why. *Sob* And before that during school, I had drawn a pic of Kaito, on whim, holding a white, plain mask to his face and dressed completely in black. That was yesterday. Last night at about 11: 30 pm, I was in bed and couldn’t stop thinking about it. And I got the urge to write a poem about Kaito’s dual and contrasting sides. Think about it. In the day, Kaito is just plain old Kaito Kuroba. But that name, Kuroba, means ‘black feathers’. And God knows I love to play with the Conan cast’s names. And I thought about it. Kuroba always dressed in black, and yet has a bright, cheerful and playful nature – totally contradicting the meaning of the colour black. And by night, he is the elusive phantom thief 1412 – Kid. Mysterious, flamboyant, and on the wrong side of the law. Unlike the colour white, which is calm, pure, and hides no secrets.
So this poem is basically about the light and dark sides of Kaito. But whether his normal Kaito Kuroba side (darkly clad but cheerful and innocent) or his Kaitou Kid side (lightly clothed but ever mysterious and criminal) is the dark side the poem was talking about, remains mystery. And the ‘lady’ can be either referred to the Pandora gem or Kaito’s main lady, Aoko (cheer). The box thingy in line 8 refers to Pandora’s box, which was opened and unleashed terrible horrors onto the world, as well as the light of hope. And we all know Kaito’s battling against the equivalent of darkness and light – the Black org and the undertakers of justice, Hakuba and the police force. Kinda sad. This is why I like Kaito the best (one of the reasons anyways). He’s so internally ironic in a sweet kinda way. That, and his hair’s fun to draw.
I should hope I don’t hafta explain how every single verse works in both Kid and Kaito’s favor, but I’ll be brief. Why? I feel like rambling today.
The black feathers, ethereal wings – either the family name (Kuroba) and magic skills or the tainted criminal kaitou blood passed down from generation to generation (I shouldn’t refer to it as tainted, but technically it is illegal.)
First three lines of verse 2 – ‘To find the one’… that often refers to finding love, but Kaito’s also trying to find the one ever special rock in a rock. Joys.
The box – I told you this already. Blag.
Just about the entire third verse – will apply to Kaito hiding his identity as the Kid, or the Kid just plain being secretive. Not to mention both of them act like that.
Fourth verse – Geez, this should be painstakingly obvious. The thing’s entirely about Kid’s heists.
Eye o’ time – either could be the passing of time and eventual comings due to destiny and all that, or the clock tower (and we ALL know what happened at the clocker tower, DON’T WE?!?!?! *threatening glare.*)
The two meeting – Kaito meeting Aoko, or Kid finding the immortality rock.
Last two lines – Pandora, as I’ve already said unless you haven’t been reading all I’ve been typing, also refers to Aoko, because she is supposedly Kaito's first and only woman (Or else she would’ve fallen for Akako by now.) so Pandora taking off his mask is basically either the gem releasing Kid from his burden and letting him retire and turn into regular old Kaito Kuroba without the Kid façade, or Aoko taking off Kaito’s mask and realizing he’s Kid and all that.
You do all understand this was written on a whim and that’s why it sucks so much, right? Good. Just making sure.
The ethereal wings of ebony fly
To seek the skies at midnight’s toll
Clad in my father’s moonlit cloak.
Ever seeking what is naught
To claim the first lady first
To fight the horrors in her box.
Underneath the smiling mask
I jest and riddle beneath the covers
I hide my true face within.
I am the robber of your things
I come to you in dark of night
Give chase and I will flee.
One day the two of us will meet
And I wonder if this Pandora
Will end the nightly masquerade…
