Mar 14 - Casey Jones Day. His name was really John Luther Jones - but he hailed from a place called "Cayce, Kentucky" (he'd been born near there on March 14, 1864), so it was natural that he'd be dubbed "Casey." On the dark and foggy night of his death, April 30, 1900, he'd been unable to see signs that would have warned him of what was ahead. Thus, he realized too late that his engine was about to plow into the back of another train. Casey refused to jump, in order to give his crew and passengers - and the brakeman on the caboose dead ahead - their best chance to survive the inevitable crash.

Mar 15 - Ides of March. Did you know that every month has an "Ides"? It does: but it's not always quite the day in the middle of the month. . . It's the fifteenth of March, May, July, and October, but it's the thirteenth of all the other months. "Ides" has an ominous sound to it, just because of the story Shakespeare told - about how Julius Caesar went to the forum and came to a sudden and painful end at the hands of his sometime friends. That was on the "Ides of March" in 44 BC - even after he'd been warned by the soothsayer to "Beware" them.

Mar 20 - April 2 - Now Ruz. People with a Persian heritage (Iranians, Iraqis, Afghans and some other from the Middle East) jump over bonfires before their New Year celebration called Now Rus (pronounced no-ROOZ). Fire -jumping is just one part of the preparations

Mar 27 - A Happy Birthday For Everybody. In 1924, Patty Smith Hill (who was born March 27, 1868, and died May 25, 1946) wrote a verse beginning, "Happy birthday to you. . ."

Mar 28 - Come To The Circus Day. March 28, 1881, was the date P.T. Barnum and James A. Bailey merged their respective circuses; that was, of course, before the Brothers Ringling bought the show and added their names.
