It has never been shown that the death penalty deters violent crimes more effectively than other punishments.
A survey by the UN on the relation between the death penalty and homicide rates concluded, "research has failed to provide scientific proof that executions have a greater deterrent than life imprisonment and such proof is unlikely to be forthcoming."

Lieutenant Gregory Ruff, a police officer in Kansas for 23 years, agrees: "I have seen the ugliness of murder up close and personal. But I have never heard a murder suspect say they thought about the death penalty as a consequence of their actions prior to committing their crimes."
